THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF ESTIN SAWYER….. AN ABACO
LEGEND
Estin Sawyer is a musician located on the
island of Abaco in
the Bahamas.
Estin Rannymore Sawyer was born in Dundas Town, Abaco on January, 14, 1944
to Arthur (Will) and Letta Sawyer who died when Estin was 14 months old.
Estin was nurtured by his aunt Pezzreta Cornish (Pessie) and his elder
sister Flora. He has fond memories of attending Dundas Town All-age
School, where at a young age Mr. Sherlyn Bootle instilled in him the
virtues of self-reliance and perseverance.
These virtues have been the source of inner strength which guided him
through the formative years as a young man and have given him the
confidence to pursue his goals in the world of entertainment.
The late 1960’s were the hey-days of the Treasure Cay Resort. This was
were Estin performed his week end gigs with his band called the “Dell
Tunes”. Members include the late Nelson Mills as drummer, Tyrone Henderson
on bass along with Estin Sawyer, Silbert Cooper on second lead guitar.
These venues offered Estin a stage to showcase his talents to an
international clientele.
Thanks to the Ministry of Tourism’s Promotion of Bahamian Art and Culture,
Estin has performed in London, Germany, thanks to Gail Aster, who
commissioned Estin to perform solo at the Patch of Maiden Restaurant in
Toledo, Ohio. Estin has had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the
likes of Elton John and Paul McCartney to name a few.
Estin would feel remiss if he did not acknowledge the support of his (8)
children: Kim, Christine, Barbara, Clint Al, Carlos, Sabrina and Mark and
his new bride Lana. Of the eight, Clint is the one who has decided to keep
the music tradition, he plays with a six piece band, like his father also
performs solo.
We can hear Mr. Sawyer perform a medley of calypso and jazz tunes- old
Caribbean favourites like Matilda, My Island in the Sun in a style similar
to the late George Symonette and Blind Blake, Estin is known to many
repeat visitors of the Abacos as the black Willie Nelson.
Estin performs every Sunday thru Friday @ 7-11pm a the Mangoes restaurant
at Green Turtle Cay Club every Saturday at lunch from 12-3pm and Saturday
evenings at 7-10pm at Wally’s. Estin is also a taxi driver (Taxi 67) and
can be contacted on the local VHF-1 in the Abacos.
Estin is available for private functions:
